Founded by Director Laurelle Brown, we trace our roots to Laurelle’s early experiences over twenty years ago as a volunteer worker on play schemes and respite breaks for children with disabilities, as well as her involvement in fundraising for her local Women’s Aid Refuge. Throughout her career spanning the public, private, and third sectors, Laurelle grew increasingly challenged and frustrated by the persistent disparities in outcomes for children from Black and minoritised communities compared to others, coupled with inconsistencies in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) leadership and change approaches across systems.
Driven by a desire to address these challenges head-on, Laurelle Brown Training and Consultancy (LBTC) was established in 2017. What began as delivering training and facilitation services has evolved into a full-service consultancy. Today, our team comprises a diverse team with lived experience of a range of intersecting protected characteristics, experiences and backgrounds, and extensive experience across a range of disciplines including children and adults safeguarding, human resources, coaching, research, policy, and community engagement.
LBTC stands as a response to the persistent challenges and discrimination faced by racialised children across the services and support systems they rely on. Our mission is clear: to understand, develop, and effect sustainable EDI change in three key areas:
- System Capacities: Developing structures, cultures, and processes within organisations that reduce the systematic disadvantage impacting racialised children across systems.
- Leadership Outcomes: Empowering and equipping leaders and decision-makers to boldly tackle complex inequalities challenges and drive meaningful change within their spheres of control, and influence.
- Practice Developments: Supporting practices and approaches that recognise and meet the needs of racialised children.
At LBTC, we are driven by a commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive systems. More detail on how we achieve this is outlined in our Theory of Change below.
What we do
We specialise in collaborating with partners to develop and drive meaningful and sustainable equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) change across complex systems for children.
Using deep knowledge, experience and expertise, our small team of core and associate staff collaboratively navigate the complexities of effecting transformative EDI change within safeguarding systems. Our approach is rooted in evidence-based practices, systems-thinking, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities inherent in promoting equity, inclusion and justice for children in the face of structural inequalities.
We offer a range of services across four key domains:
Learning and Development
We provide engaging learning and development activities aimed at deepening understanding and awareness of barriers and enablers to change, and enhancing capacity to mobilise progress.
Facilitation
We facilitate transformative opportunities, processes, and events designed to foster active listening, inspiration, and reflection. By creating spaces for dialogue and collaboration, we empower partners to effectively plan and deliver change initiatives with clarity and purpose.
Change and transformation
We work collaboratively with partners to develop and embed strategic change and transformation tailored to their unique needs and context. We harness the knowledge, experience and expertise of our diverse team to plan and navigate the complexities of implementing impactful EDI initiatives across systems, leadership and practice for children.
Evidence and insight
We harnesses the power of data to catalyse wider systems impact and learning. We collate, generate, and disseminate evidence and insights to support and empower systems, organisations and leaders to understand and develop sustainable EDI change.
Our vision and values
At LBTC, our values are more than just words on paper – they are the guiding principles that underpin everything we do. We are deeply committed to upholding these values in every aspect of our work, from our client engagements to our internal operations.
